How a Hard Disk Drive Records Data

Bookmark and Share

Computer hard-disk drives are in exercise in more or less every desktop computer in today's technological grounds. A desktop computer for the most part commonly exercises one hard-disk drive while servers, computers, and supercomputers make use of hundreds of them at one time to convey the predictable outcomes of their users. Up till now, in all of these systems, the hard-disk drive does one job.

  • Hard-disk drives store up altering digital information in a partially permanent state and provide computers the capability to memorize data even when power is not provided to the computer, such as happens with a power outage.

  • Exclusive of the hard-disk drive, a computer would be not sufficiently expert of remembering the series of data that is requisite to perform the simplest of operations, together with booting up for use.

  • A hard-disk drive is little bit easier to comprehend once it is taken apart and its system of arranging the gigabytes of information detained inside its files.

  • The capability to "make out" the computer's hard-disk drive job over and over again removes the fright of the unidentified, or what you can do to the computer earlier than it won't be acquainted with its own information, thus causing a deadly crash to take place.

  • By the way, even if you do seriously crash your computer's drive, it isn't the end of the world. A blown hard-disk drive can be refurbished by replacing any non-functioning parts and rebooting an operating system in the case that the operating system files compulsory for operation of the computer have been smashed or deleted.

  • The name hard-disk drive came later on to make a distinction between floppy drives and the hard-drives. Functioning on the similar principle as a cassette tape with a few modifications in method, the hard-disk was capable to amass information magnetically, but was also well suited for trouble-free erasing and rewriting of information for the convenience of transformation since the core of information has always changed speedily in the field of computers.

  • There are quite a lot of key differences between the two that make hard-disk drives exceptional. The technique of transferring information or data to a cassette tape makes the difference between the two.

  • Data recorded to a cassette tape is encrusted onto a slim plastic strip in which a drive magnetically accounts data onto high-precision aluminum or glass disks and then polishes the data to mirror softness. The tempo of rewinding and fast-forwarding also differ as hard-disk drives can do this immediately.

  • Data to a drive never in point of fact touches the surface of the aluminum disks or glass that it is documented onto in view of the fact that the information is read and is in black and white in head "files" over the disk.

  • Cassettes have need of actual contact to make use of the same magnetic principles for recording data

  • Considering it as extremely classy cassette tape also provides an improved visual into how it works and the skill that the disk drive provides a client. In subsequent articles, more appealing and easy to follow functions of the hard-disk drive will be discovered in order to make a more user-friendly relationship between a user and computer's hard-disk drive.

CD - ROMS: Advantages And Disadvantages

Bookmark and Share
CD-ROM Advantages

When compared to instructor-led programs, the features and benefits of CD-ROM training include all those shared by other types of technology-based training:
• self-paced
• highly interactive
• increased retention rates
• reduced costs.

When compared to Web-based training, the benefits largely come from the fact that CD-ROMs usually provide a more engaging learning experience, with text, audio, video, and animations all used to convey information. Typically, a graphic will be displayed along with bulleted text as an audio narration provides the primary content. Video clips can be used to show human behaviors or complex operations. This use of multiple media means that learning is optimized for all three learning styles: auditory, kinesthetic, and visual.

Student engagement is also increased with the use of creative themes or metaphors. Whether the topic is sales training or understanding a new computer system, today's programs are often wrapped in a classic Hollywood genre: science fiction, mystery, adventure, or even television talk shows and game shows. Students can play the role of starship captain, a private eye, or swashbuckling archeologist as they explore their way through knowledge and conquer the learning objectives.

Finally, since people learn best from experience, the multimedia capability of CD-ROMs provides the power to create realistic job simulations. For example, a sales training program could put the student face-to-face with a tough prospect. ("Your prices are 10 percent higher than what I'm paying now!") Medical education programs put new doctors in front of simulated patients. ("Would you choose chemotherapy or surgery?") Soldiers choose tactics on a realistic battlefield. ("Enemy tank is flanking 500 yards to the right.") CEOs could hone their approach to crisis management. ("Ms. Jones, the 6 o'clock news crew is in the lobby demanding a statement about our product recall. What should we do?")

In each case, a discovery-learning simulation can be developed using disk-based CBT, or delivered via the Web, but with bandwidth limitations the simulations would consist of only text and graphics. The learning is enhanced with multimedia CD-ROM because students are able to see the body language and hear the voices of on-screen video participants, and interact in real-time using a greater number of senses.

CD-ROM Limitations

One of the disadvantages of CD-ROM based training, when compared to instructor-led delivery, is the lack of peer-to-peer learning opportunities. After all, good instructors are really supposed to be facilitators, who bring out experience-based lessons and realizations from the students themselves. Additionally, there are other benefits from the socialization that takes place in a physical classroom, including higher motivation, team building, and creation of relationships that can be supportive long after the training is over.

The biggest drawback of CD-ROM-based training when compared to Web-based training is the difficulty in updating or changing the content. Once a CD-ROM is created, the information on it can not be changed. If a widget manufacturer uses CD-ROMs to train its sales force and they create a better widget, a new training CD-ROM will have to be created, duplicated, and distributed to the sales force. Depending on the size of the sales force, distributing new CD-ROMs could cost thousands of dollars. More important than the higher cost is the additional time required. Once the training program itself is updated, it typically takes three weeks for a duplication company to complete an order, which is likely followed by another week to package, address, and ship the CDs to the sales representatives.

Finally, CD-ROM programs present a challenge when it comes to student tracking. Because the CD is a distributed system without a direct link back to a training manager, other types of media must also be used for the reporting of student scores and completion certificates. Common methods include:

* Printout of score report or certificate, which is then faxed or mailed to a manager or the corporate training department.
* Final score is saved as a small data file onto a floppy diskette, which is then mailed back to the home office for processing.
* If student has e-mail access, but no Intranet is available for automatic distribution, assessment score files can be attached to e-mail messages and sent to a training manager.

In summary, multimedia CD-ROMs -- and their future replacements, DVDs -- offer many advantages and limitations which must be compared to other delivery options on each training program.

Top 4 ways to Back-Up your data

Bookmark and Share
Having your computer crash and losing all of your data can be one of the most frustrating things that can happen, especially if you own a business and you lose vital information for your company. Here is something that I have typed up so that you can make sure that that data is safe and that nothing can happen to it.
The only way to really make sure that this information is safe is to back it up. A Back-Up is simply making a copy of the file somewhere else to make sure that when your computer crashes you will just be able to take your Back-Up out and have all your information again. Here are the different ways to Back-Up.

This is the most common type of Back-Up media. It is ideal for when you have extremely large amounts of something, for example Movies, Games, and lots of pictures. The one you see on the left here is a 500GB; this means it can hold the following:

50 Games

714 Movies

150,000 Songs

550,000 Pictures

500,000,000,000 Text documents

The average price for this is about $90-$120 USD.

If you buy a 500GB for $90, that's 5.55GB per Dollar

If you buy a 1,000GB for $120, that's 8.33GB per Dollar

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CD/DVD ROM's

This is the best type of media if you plan on making Back-Ups on a regular basis and if you do not have too much data that you need saved. This is also a good method but it has two downsides. The first is that you need to put in a new DVD Rom for every 4.4GB you Back-Up.

The average price if you buy 50 DVD's is about $0.28 each.

This equals up to about 15GB per Dollar!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flash Drives

By now everyone should know what this is! Most people think that it is only for transferring data. But it works quite well for storing it as well! The only downside is the low capacity, but if it's only text files then this should be good.

If you buy a 4GB for $10, then it is about 0.4GB per Dollar.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Online storage

Not a lot of people think about this option. These are basically uploading your files to a website that offers online storage and then when you need the files just download them back. This is extremely cheap and easy to use, but there is always one downside. It is very slow. You can only upload and download as fast as your internet connection can work, and when dealing with large amounts of files, this can take some time.

I am not going to get to in depth with this because you can simple search the web for this and find the answers you need.

If you buy 150GB for $50 a year, then that is 3GB per Dollar per year.

Well, that is all I can teach you about Backing-Up your data. Remember to decrease the chance of your hard drive crashing just keep your computer in a very cold room and do not constantly read/write from the drive.

How to Install A Hard Disk Drive in a Desktop Computer

1. Make completely sure that you are not wearing any
clothing that is conducive to producing static
electricity, like wool sweaters. Then make sure you are
grounded by touching the computer chassis so that all
built up static electricity is drained. Wearing latex
hospital gloves is helpful in protecting the computer
from static shock.

2. Turn the computer off if it is still on. Disconnect all
lines connected to the desktop. This includes the mouse.
keyboard, speaker, display cable printer and any device
connected to the usb ports.

3. Remove the chassis cover. Be careful not to lose any
screws.

4. You will find a set of bays for ide / scsi devices. There
should be at 1 5 1/4 in. bay and 1 3 1/2 in. bay. Most
hard drive fit in the 5 1/4 in. bay. The 3 1/2 in. bay
are usually the size of a floppy drive. Hard drives that
are 3 1/2 in. are usually for laptops. Slide the hard
disk in the bay slot. Do not screw down the hard drive
yet.

5. Connect the data (ribbon) to the back of the hard drive.

Note: The data (ribbon) cable is what they call idiot
proof, meaning it will fit only one way. For your
knowledge though, the end with the red mark should
always face left, unless stated differently
(rarely) by the manufacturer.

6. Connect the power cable the back of the hard drive.

Note: When removing a hard drive you would remove the
data cable before removing the power line. This
will prevent damage to the motherboard if an static
surge occurs while removing the power line.

7. Line up the hard drive and screw it down. Some hard
drives snap in place. Replace the cover on the chassis.
reconnect all the cables, cords and usb connections.

Note: You will have to install an operating system on
this hard drive before you can "bootup" your system
